D. Litt conferred on Hussain, Ammannur, Usha

Kannur University awarded the honorary Doctorate (D.Litt) to renowned painter Shri. M.F. Hussain, maestro of Kootiyattam Shri. Ammannur Madhava Chakyar and India’s best-known woman athlete Smt. P.T. Usha on 15 January 2002. The Governer Justice Shri. Sukhdev Singh Kang, Chacellor of the University conferred the Degrees on Ammannur Madhava Chakyar and P.T.Usha, while M.F. Hussain received it in absentia, at a special convocation ceremony held most impressively at the Kannur University campus at Mangattuparamba.

Justice Shri. Sukhdev Singh Kang, in his convocation address described the three eminent personalities as “honour and pride of our nation” and said that by honouring them “we are paying tributes to our common culture, our entity as a nation, and our hard earned standing among the comity of nations”. The Governor said that the occasion was a day of pride for the University.

The convocation address was followed by the acceptance speeches of the recipients. The Education Minister Shri. Nalakathu Soopy, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University addressed the convocation. Earlier Dr. P.K. Rajan, Vice-Chancellor of the University, read out the citation. A large gathering of academicians scholars and Vice-Chancellors of various universities were present at the ceremony.
