Dr. K. N. Raj, illustrious economist and former Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University lauded Kerala’s efforts in decentralisation and stated that it has contributed to the economic growth and social development of the state. Dr. Raj said that the actual development should be estimated not only in terms of the increase in the growth rate but also of its distribution, Kerala stands far ahead of other states because of the participation and intervention of the society in developmental activities.
Delivering a lecture on ‘Economic Growth and Social Development’ organized by the Kannur University at the Press Club auditorium, Kannur on 26 May, Dr. Raj said that the major concern of economists should be how equitably the fruits of economic growth are distributed.
“Unfortunately this understanding of economics is missing and interest in social development is on the decline among leading economists of the world”, he said. If economists are unconcerned about the lot of the people, Economics loses its relevance as a Social Science, he observed.
The economy of India has grown tremendously, but the magnitude of poverty is appalling and without parallel in the world, he said adding that equitable distribution of growth output is more important than growth itself.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. P.K. Rajan presided over the function. The Director of Student Services V.S. Anil Kumar welcomed the gathering.
