A PROFILE

The Department of Studies in English, Kannur University was originally started as an off-campus centre of the Department of English, University of Calicut at Thalassery in 1974. It was transferred to Kannur University in 1996 when Calicut University was bifurcated. Thus it has become the first Department of the newly formed Kannur University named as  Institute of English and Foreign Languages.  In 2004 when Kannur University renamed all departments through a notification, Department of Studies in English under the School of English and Foreign Languages came into being. It was a landmark in the history of the Department when it won an award of  Rs.25 lakh by the University Grants Commission to run a PG Diploma course under the Innovative programme in Emerging disciplines in the Tenth Plan based on the proposal of the Department submitted to the UGC.

During the last three and a half decades of its existence, eminent academics like Prof C. A. Sheppard, Dr C. T. Thomas, Prof. G. Kumara Pillai, Dr. S. Velayudhan, Dr. R. Viswanathan, Dr. C. P. Sivadasan, Dr. N. Ramachandran Nair served the department as members of the faculty. In addition to producing almost 35 batches of Post Graduates, the department has produced a number of scholars who earned PhD and MPhil, and has conducted many national and international seminars and workshops.  Prof.C.P.Sivadasan was the first Head of the Department when it had become part

of Kannur University. Prof. M.Dasan succeeded him after his retirement. Prof. S. Josh has been the Head of the Department since October 2006.

Courses

Department of Studies in English has become the first teaching department of Kannur University to receive financial assistance from the UGC along with a permanent teaching post. When the new UGC sanctioned and supported innovative course - PG Diploma in Virtual Media- was started in 2005, it has become the first university department in India to offer a course in virtual media, an area considered an emerging discipline in Science and Technology. As the first department of the new Kannur University--the department started in 1974 in Calicut University was transferred to Kannur University in 1996--, it widened its base, scope and activities. Apart from the regular Post Graduate and Research programmes, the Department ventured to offer courses in other foreign languages like French, German and Arabic. Now the Department offers MA, MPhil and Ph D courses in English Language and Literature, PG Diploma in Virtual Media with UGC support and optional courses in Film Studies, Media Studies, Translation Studies etc .  The Department also offered Certificate courses and Diploma courses in Communicative English and French. The Department switched over to Credit and Semester pattern for the courses offered by the Department from 2006 onwards as part of the new policy of the University.
