The Department of Chemistry, School of Chemical Sciences, Kannur University started functioning from 11-09-2002 and is temporarily housed in the Rendezvous Sports Complex, Moorikkovil, Payyanur.
            The First Co-Ordinator of this Department was Dr. C.P. Prabhakaran, former Professor and H.O.D of Chemistry, Kerala University worked until 8-12-2003. At present Dr. T.D.Radhakrishnan Nair former Professor and HOD of Chemistry, Calicut University is co-ordinating this department.
            The Department is offering M.Sc Chemistry (Material Science) course and 12 Students are admitted annually. The course is structured on a semester pattern consisting of 4 Semesters and the students have to do project work in institutions of National repute during the 4^th semester.
            The First and Second batch of students carried out their project work in the R.R.L TV, C-MET, Thrissur, and Western India Plywoods Ltd, Valapattanam. II Sem. Examinations for the third batch of students are over.
            At present the Department Library has 328 volumes of books and 6 Journals. Efforts are being made for procuring modern equipments for the Laboratory. Computers are there with e-mail facility. The permanent building for housing the Department is being constructed and the work is in progress. It is expected to shift to the new premisis in this year itself.
            U.G.C Team visited the Dept on 15-6-2004 in connection with the X Plan allocations and the Dept. submitted detailed proposals for the future development of this Dept.
            The departmental activities are managed with the help of C.L.R Assistant C.L.R. Lab assistant and C.L.R Peron Presently Two Guest Lecturers on yearly contract are working in this Department. Sanction has also been made for inviting Guest faculties for lecturing on differents topics as per syllabus, and classes on selected topics are handled by eminent Professors and Scientists from the universities of Mangalore, Cochin, Calicut and the R.R.L for the benefit of the M.Sc Students.
            The First batch has already completed their course and the results were published. There is one distinction and eight first classes. Some of the students have also received placements.
