The Department of Music, Kannur University was established in 2002. The Dept offers MA Music programme and PhD. So far 17 batches of students have passed out from this Dept. This Dept is the only Dept offering PG programme in Music in the Malabar area. The Department is functioning at Swami Ananda Theertha Campus, Kannur University, Edat, Payyanur. The Dept has a well equipped library with more than 1600 books and more than 10 journals. We have a good collection of CD’s of well known musicians. The Dept also possess variety of musical instruments such as tambura, veena, violin, mridangam, key board, harmonium etc. The Dept is active in the research of various areas of music. So far 7 scholars have been awarded PhD. 2 students have submitted their PhD thesis.

The Dept of Music conducts invited lecture classes by famous Carnatic musicians, critics etc. We also organise music concerts of eminent Carnatic musicians. During the last ten years, around hundred personalities from music field have visited our Dept and has conducted classes and concerts. Also, numerous seminars and workshops in collaboration with IGNCA, New Delhi, AIR, Kannur, South zone Cultural centre, Thanjavur, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and Folklore Academy, Kannur have been conducted.

Music, being a performing art, the Dept of Music is actively engaged in various Classical music programmes organized in different parts of the country. Our students have presented programmes of music over AIR and TV on many occasions. Alumni of the Dept have made a mark in the field of carnatic music and many are well known performers. Our students have also presented papers and participated in Seminars by other Uty’s.
