History

The School of Life Sciences, Kannur University, had its inception in the year 2000, in the village of Palayad, Thalassery under the founder Head of the Department Dr. M.Haridas. The Dept. Of Biotechnology and Microbiology, under the school of Life Sciences, has created its own niche in the academic and research field, with 9 permanent faculty members and one Emeritus Scientist. We have a 12.5% success rate in JRF-NET examinations and our students pursue Ph.D from several national and international institutes/ universities like the University of Rome, Seol University Korea, University of Hamburg, The Catholic University, Belgium etc. Our alumni are postdoctoral fellows in the University of New York, The Reiken Centre, Japan, etc.   

We have established ourselves as researchers in the areas of Structural biology, Microbial bioprocessing, Stress biology, Microbial antibiotics & Endocrinology with 25 Ph.Ds, more than 150 publications (Imp. Factor 1-5: citation index 0-60) and 3 patents.  

The department has attracted research funding amounting to 679.2 lakhs from National Agencies like DBT, DST, UGC and the State Govt and 165.28 lakhs as faculty research funding. Our major facilities include LCMS, ITC, HPTLC, animal house, Bio safety Lab etc. We house 5 Post doctoral fellows and 33 Research Scholars.

International Collaborations with Mexico University (50lakhs) and a DBT network project (40 lakhs) are recent milestones.

A RUSA funded ( 1.5 crores) ‘Centre fo Bioinnovation & Product Research’ is the latest addition to the department.
